Passport Update
Passports & Visa Regulations
In order to enter and travel in France you must carry acceptable identification. For citizens of European Union countries, a current valid national identity card is sufficient. Travelers from all other countries must carry a valid national passport and one other form of identification. Depending on nationality, the duration and the reason for stay in France, it may be necessary to obtain a visa before leaving. In this case, you should apply to the French consulate in your country. Visas are not required for visitors staying less than 90 days who are U.S. citizens, EU nationals, or from Canada or New Zealand. Check on entrance requirements at your nearest French embassy or consulate for up-to-date information before departure.

You will find details on the website of the French Ministry for Foreign Affairs:

Driving documents
As well as having to carry your International Driving Permit or drivers license, all drivers from non-EU countries must be in possession of the registration document called a "carte grise" (grey card), and an insurance certificate. These will be required when renting a car in a legal car rental company. Check with your motor vehicle insurance company regarding any documents you will need and whether additional insurance is required.
